Good news for iPhone Facebook users: version 3.0 of Facebook’s iPhone application is 98% complete according to Joe Hewitt, lead engineer for this popular app. No release date yet. Timing is a little off, we can only assume the target date was set to coincide with the new iPhone 3G S. My bet is those guys will be working over the Fourth of July weekend.

A note from Joe on Facebook gives a list of the new features we’ll get with iPhone Facebook 3.0:
1. The “new” News Feed
2. Like
3. Events (including the ability to RSVP)
4. Notes
5. Pages … those are the Fan pages.
6. Create new photo albums
7. Upload photos to any album
8. Zoom into photos
9. Easier photo tagging
10. Profile Pictures albums
11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
13. Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
14. Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page
15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call

3.0 brings users a lot closer to the total Facebook experience, and much closer than the BlackBerry Facebook application. Internet phone users will find one more reason to skip the computer and just use their phone. Some call it feature creep, we call it convenience.

And Joe Hewitt knows there will be plenty of takers for the updated app. Almost 25% of all iPhone owners use his Facebook app. Joe is not alone in the developer scramble to capitalize on the new iPhone features with OS 3 like push notifications, turn-by-turn navigation, cut-and-paste, embeddable maps, access to external accessories, search within apps, and subscriptions. New apps are appearing on itunes daily. Facebook is free, but prices for new paid apps have fluctuated wildly since the iPhone’s release on June 17, more top apps coming in at $1.99, $4.99 and $9.99. Not such good news for iPhone users.
