App Aims: Translating The Emerald Isle’s Jargon
Reviewer’s Comments
Ever wonder who or what a Danny Boy is? Should you worry when your Irish pals starting throwing around words like “deadly” or “murder”? Not to worry, the Irish Slang Dictionary app by Kolor Design Pty Ltd will save you from being scundered (embarrassed) when in company with your Gaelic friends.
This app is a simple alphabetical index of Irish slang words and terms with a Search capability. One of its more interesting points (other than the terms themselves) is the History button. This feature tracks which selections you make so that you don’t have to remember all the definitions you’ve looked at. You can simply check your browsing history. If there are words you don’t want to keep in the history, you can delete them and just save your favorites.
While the words and terms included in the index of the Irish Slang Dictionary are colorful and interesting we found it difficult to find the terms for English words. For example, trying to find the slang term for friends meant scrolling endlessly through the list reading the translations to find the Irish slang for friend. As it stands now, the app is organized to find a term you hear and don’t recognize. This isn’t the app to help you easily find the slang for a word you already know. It would also be helpful on some of the more obscure words to have a pronunciation guide. This is a fun app that is especially useful around St. Patrick’s Day to help set the mood for the holiday and, for a dollar, worth the investment.
