Dictionaries are one of those things that everyone would benefit from having but it’s way too inconvenient to haul around when you need it. Not anymore. Now you can have 300,000 words at your fingertip within seconds. Of course, the application has everything you would expect in a traditional dictionary. What makes this so much better though, is that you don’t even have to guess at how to pronounce the words that you’re too ashamed to admit you can’t even read. There are sound clips next to a majority of the words. And many of them have pictures that you can zoom in on that explain concepts or shows related words. The full power of this application is that every word is clickable and will jump you to that word’s meaning. And you can always go back to what you were just looking at. At least once. It would be nice if you could go forward and back as many times as you need during one session but it appears it only tracks your progression once. If you have Roget’s Thesaurus app installed, clicking on the word will automatically take you to the Thesaurus entry for that word and when you’re done, clicking the back button will take you back to the Dictionary app. Other features include the ability to add any word to a personal Bookmark list and being able to see a history of all the words you’ve looked at. I’ve also found the application to be very fast considering it’s huge size. It’s quite a database of information packed into one little app but I found it to work smoothly and quickly. The new updates have noticeably increased the speed even more.

To sum up, the American Heritage Dictionary – Fourth Edition iPhone app is the most robust digital dictionary you could have. It’s powerful, intuitive and easy to use.
