Reviewer’s Comments:
American Heritage Deluxe is a bundle package of one of the best Dictionaries and Thesauruses around. The dictionary itself has 300,000 words, 64,000 recorded sound files and 33,000 written examples at your fingertips within seconds. It even has some zoomable high-quality graphics that are really cool. I only wish there were more of them. It’s definitely a hit and miss. But, it IS a dictionary and not an encyclopedia. The full power of this application is that every word is clickable and will jump you to that word’s meaning. Plus, you can always go back to what you were just looking at. At least once. It would be nice if you could go forwards and backwards as many times as you need during one session but it appears it only tracks your progression once. You can also switch back and forth between the Dictionary and the Thesaurus easily.
I have a couple of complaints with the integration of these two apps however. Even though they are integrated into a much more cost-effective bundle, they are still two separate apps. You have to go from one to the other on any given word. It would have been nice to see both of them on one screen for any given word. The other thing that is a bit annoying is that every word is highlighted to take you to the Thesaurus, even if that word doesn’t appear in the Thesaurus. Many times I would click on a word in the dictionary to switch to the Thesaurus only to have a screen tell me that it wasn’t available. If the word is not available in the Thesaurus, I would expect it to not have a link to it.
Despite my few complaints, I don’t think there’s a better product out there for the price. You never know how useful a dictionary in your pocket can be until you have one.
