iPrint Photo: Wireless Printing App for iPhone
HP has released a new app for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch which will allow for wireless printing of photographs. The application, known as iPrint Photo is available from the iTunes Store for the very reasonable price of free.
With iPrint Photo, iPhone and iPod Touch users can skip the step of transferring photos to a computer before printing. All that's needed is an HP inkjet printer connected to a wireless Wi-Fi network. Simply launch the application, select a photo by touching it, and the app sends the print command to the printer via the Wi-Fi network.
The application can be used to print photos that have been taken with the iPhone's built-in camera or ones that have been uploaded to the device from a computer. Because the iPod touch doesn't include a camera, only photos that have been uploaded can be printed.
At present, the application has several limitations. In addition to only being compatible with HP printers on a Wi-Fi network, the app supports only JPEG images and will only print 4x6-inch photos. The quality of the borderless prints is enhanced through image de-noise filtering technology. Though HP representatives have declined comment, it's reasonable to expect that future modifications will expand the capabilities to accommodate other file formats and photo dimensions.
iPrint Photo is compatible with Apple's Bonjour system which automatically detects HP wireless printers or other HP printers available on the wireless network. It works with standard Wi-Fi network routers including Apple Airport, Linksys, D-Link and Netgear.
