App Aims: One-Stop People, Places and Services Locater
Reviewer’s Comments
The Where app functions as a front end for a variety of information gathered from other sites such as Yelp, Starbucks, GasBuddy and Skymap to name just a few. Using the Local Notes feature, the app allows you to create chatty notes to let other users know what you thought of a place or event.
The app was tested on a 16G iPhone using the 3G network and the location accuracy was off by two or three city blocks. It also “finds” companies that are no longer in business and haven’t been for more than a year. These things make it difficult to trust the information that’s provided, which renders the program moot.
Where’s interface is missing a major feature. The app basically functions as a front end for Apple’s Maps app and integrates information from a variety of other sources. A source of major frustration is that once you tap a button for directions, you’re taken out of the Where app. If you weren’t done looking you’ve got to go through the whole process of starting up the program, finding your location and then back to the main graphic map screen.
The developers of Where have set themselves a challenging task. To bring together such a wide variety of information is an admirable idea, to be sure, but if the information provided is incomplete or inaccurate it becomes difficult to trust the application. Where simply regurgitates information gathered from other sites and presents that knowledge without worrying if it’s accurate.
