App Aims: Find Everything, Even Your Friends

Earthcomber is a fun, practical app that finds businesses, fun locations and your friends based on your current location. For example, if you’re looking for live music in a city you are visiting it will provide a list of local music venues beginning with the locations closest to you. If you’re in your hometown, you can tap “Set My Location Here,” and it will let your friends, who also use the app, know where you are.

This iPhone and iPod touch app offers quite a few categories to choose from, such at free WiFi spots, gas stations, post offices and bars, as well as links to Wikipedia and Panoramio referenced locations. You can search by topic, for example, when we searched for “shoes” it came up with quite a few shoe store choices. Like most navigation apps it supplies a Google Map of the location and directions. We were surprised to find that even using the iPod touch the app knew our location, so you don’t have to have an iPhone to utilize the features of this app.

We found this navigation app very useful and liked the friend finder feature. That feature would really be useful if you’re trying to meet up with friends at a particular entertainment venue, club or coffee shop. An interesting feature that this app could easily add is the ability to add specific addresses, so you could let mutual friends know that you’re at a particular dinner party or other customized location.
