Sirius XM iPhone Apps in the Works, Siriusly
In an effort to make themselves viable and avoid going the way of Circuit City, Sirius XM Radio is joining the 21st century by making a Sirius app for iPhone. It's no secret that satellite radio has been struggling since, well, its inception; that's why Sirius and XM are now one company, but the little guys have been hanging on with all their might, focusing on subscription and device sales to those purchasing new cars.
In case you haven't noticed, new cars haven't been selling much lately. On to plan B. Get out of the car business, and into the iPhone business.
According to some reports this isn't Sirius XM's first dance at the iPhone ball, and the two companies have been going back and forth for the last few months regarding the app's approval and inclusion into the store.
At the moment the only solid thing we know about the Sirius XM iPhone/ iPod app is that it will stream Sirius XM stations directly through your chosen Apple touch screen device.
Neither Sirius nor iPhone have announced a price point for the anticipated app. Sirius XM currently charges "online" subscribers (those that stream radio through their computer) $12.95 a month, no word on whether the iPhone app will be subscription based or a "one-time" purchase. Let's hope for the latter; people gripe about paying a buck for an app.
Although Sirius XM is a formidable name in radio they will be competing with other iPhone radio apps that are already established and some, like Pandora and Shazam, that are free.
