Green Up Your Life with iPhone Apps

You’ve probably seen commercials from major corporations like General Electric and their green movement or Fox’s slogan for the month of April: “Green it. Mean it.” It seems like more and more often we’re hearing of people that are taking an interest in the planet, advocating a cause to preserve a fragile ecosystem for our future generations. Of course, along with every social movement, a whole slew of iPhone apps are sure to follow. We have reviewed several different apps, but here is a summary of some more options with apps, in case you were wondering:

Get greener. There are several different apps available to help you green up your life. One really simple to us one is the Green Tips app. Every time you launch the app, you can get a new green lifestyle tip. Or, you could also use The Green Lemur. This app has been created to help people move toward a greener lifestyle. It has a wide variety of green tips and is organized in a way that will help you make the most green decisions as you go throughout your daily activities. What’s best? It’s totally FREE.

But you can also track your carbon emissions. We like the carbon trackers because it helps you see what kind of stuff you’re putting out into the atmosphere and then be accountable to yourself to lessen your footprint. Apps like MyCarbon and Carbon Tracker are good for this. Carbon Tracker takes a slightly different angle on the tracking the carbon footprint model we see in a lot of the apps, focusing more on tracking your carbon footprint for when you travel. Whether it’s for vacation or business, you can use the GPS feature to determine the length of each leg of your journey. Then you can set goals for monthly emissions and work to bring down your carbon footprint and monitor your progress against your own personal reduction targets.

Finally, you can check out these other apps to see if they’re something you’d be interested in:

The Green Book Lite: Check out our Green Book review, this is just the preview version of the New York Times Bestseller The Green Book. Check it out and see if you want to pay to read the whole thing.

Shopgreen: Check out our review of the Carbon Footprint monitor to find out more about this app, they’re very similar. But this one is related to shopping and it tracks your eco-friendly activities. This app was awarded the Emerging Technology Award Finalist at CTIA 2009, and it’s easy to see why. Although it’s a free app, you can get a lot out of it. Every time you enter your carbon emission savings into Shopgreen, you can be rewarded for your savings by local green businesses.
