While the application itself is a bit simple, it does do a good job of telling you when you are accelerating too fast, or taking a turn too fast, both of which can hinder your gas mileage. The idea behind the app is to keep the ball in the center of the screen. When you accelerate too quickly, the diameter of the ball will increase and an alarm will sound, indicating that you are accelerating too quickly. Naturally, I had to put this to the test so I hopped in my car and slammed my foot on the gas in the parking lot. Sure enough, the ball grew bigger and the alarm sounded, indicating that I was a bad driver.

Next was the cornering test. I proceeded to the street and pulled out of the parking lot with my foot on the gas. The ball not only increased due to the acceleration, but also moved to the side, indicating I was taking the turn too quickly. Ok, so far so good.

The application will continually give the driver a score of their driving, and in any given trip you can see how “green” you were. My parking lot/street test gave me an overall low score which I anticipated, meaning that the application works as described.

The Green Gas Saver application is a good idea for anyone who needs to squeeze every mile out of every gallon of gas. Just don’t spend too much time looking at your iPhone while you are out driving!
