Apple to Start Gaming Phase of World Domination Plan

In an effort, we assume, to dominate the last area of technology they haven't been able to crack yet, mainstream gaming, Apple is going to create a new section in the App Store catering to real gamers. This latest rumor is that Apple will sell games for about $20 on the new app site that will only be from large publishers.

Word on the blogosphere is that Apple will introduce it at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

This rumor makes sense because we know Apple has been trying to market the iPhone and the iPod Touch as serious gaming devices, and so adding real games to the lineup is another step in that direction. At the moment, the App Store offers more than 1,500 games from big names and smaller gaming developers alike (though they are mostly games like "Bouncing Balls" and "Bejeweled"). It also makes sense given all that we've been hearing about the iControlpad in development that will basically make the iPhone into a portable gaming console akin to the PSP.

Personally, I think this move on Apple's part seems a little mean-spirited. Sure they've never come out and said they'd like to take over the world, but their actions of late are pointing in that direction. First we have their mad scramble to pull out their patents on the multi-touch functionality of their touchscreen phones, perhaps preventing Palm from its complete rebirth with the introduction of the Palm Pre. There's also been the Kindle and GPS units rendered irrelevant by the iPhone, now we have these games entering the picture. It is clear that Apple is going after the Nintendo DS and the PSP.

What's next on your list of things you'll destroy, Apple? My job?

We'll just have to wait and see. Until then, you can read some of these other non-threatening blog posts:
