Spend Lite, the free version of the more powerful budget app Spend, is easy to use and can hold up to five different weekly budgets. The app can be used independently of your desktop computer and doesn’t require syncing; however, it can export budgets as a CSV file to Excel or Numbers.

This app is extremely simplistic; there are very few options and it does not offer advanced features, but that is the point of the program. It is meant to be a streamlined budget keeper, basically just deducting from the amount you set for expenses from the weekly or daily budget. It can also keep track of deposits. Though it takes longer to type in expense names and amounts through the iPhone screen than through a computer keyboard, the convenience of having your budget with you wherever you go helps assure that you won’t forget to enter expenses later.

It is important to note that you must keep careful track of your PIN used to access your budget. If you forget it, it can’t be retrieved and all of your data will be lost. The developer, Adamcode, offers little in the way of support, just a FAQs page and an email address.

Spend Lite is quite capable of keeping track of simple budgets, like money spent on eating out, grocery shopping, trips to the mall and so forth. However, it is not equipped to handle complicated budgets that have to track things like interest, payment due dates and tax information. We would recommend this app as a way to keep track of travel expenses, shopping budgets or other “on-the-go” expenditures as a supplement to a full personal accounting program.
