Do you remember when Joost came out and there was all that hype about streaming TV shows and other cool content? And then Joost quickly faded into the background noise of the internet as everybody realized that it wasn't nearly as cool as it claimed to be.
Then the real irony came when Hulu showed up and suddenly seemed to be doing the same thing, but doing it right. Okay, I'll admit, part of
Hulu's winning formula is that they actually had interesting content and more of it. But
Joost has been making a concerted effort lately to make itself more relevant in a post-Hulu world, which has resulted in a
Joost app for the iPhone.
My first reaction to this news is "meh." Creating an iPhone app really isn't a very original idea these days. C'mon, there are nearly 10,000 apps now. But after I thought about this for a while, I started to see the possibilities. There isn't really a competitor in the iPhone app market yet (YouTube doesn't count), and there are quite a few
iPhone and
iPod Touch users (understatement is intentional) who will form a nice market base for the app.
Early reviews of the app are pretty positive too. So it's possible that the Joost app could be a nice boost for the ailing site. That is, of course, until Hulu jumps on the bandwagon and, once again, smiles derisively as it saunters away with all the praise and viewership that Joost has been so desperately seeking. Is it just me, or does Joost's experience remind anyone else of surviving high school?
We've reviewed
Joost,
Hulu and many
other Internet TV sites. And if you need help fending off all the high school memories of wedgies, distract yourself with these
