App Aims: Kindle Up with a Good Book
Reviewer’s Comments
The Kindle has now come to the iPhone. With more than 240,000 titles available through the Kindle Store, the iPhone or iPod touch can literally carry an entire library with them wherever you go. With a simple touch of the button you can have just about any book you can think of available. They actually couldn’t make it any easier. After downloading the Kindle app on the touch or iPhone you simply sign into your Amazon account on the device. The phone will register itself and you can start receiving books. You have to order the book online and download it and then sync it up on your phone by tapping the sync icon on the screen then you’ll be good to go. It’s so easy it’s almost ridiculous.
Is it better than the Kindle? Sure it’s convenient and portable. I can read Twilight again standing in line at Subway without anyone realizing how pathetic I am. But there are a few things that keep me from calling it a success. The app doesn’t utilize the accelerometer, so it doesn’t switch between portrait and landscape. Plus, it’s frustrating to have to get the books on the computer, especially when the whole concept of the Apple devices is about portability and ease. I liked using Stanza because I could browse for and get the books right on the touch.
The Kindle Store does have a lot more titles available and it’s nice to be able to manage the library on the phone from your computer. Sometimes the small screen can make it difficult to organize long lists. However, reading on the iPhone was fine and it bookmarks your page on every book, so even if you’re switching between books you’ll be able to find your page easily.
