The Apple iPhone Apps Store has rounded the 500 million download mark, meaning that millions the world over are shifting their phones in their palm to simulate highly important tasks like, oh, playing with lighters or coiling and uncoiling a rope.

While the numbers themselves indicate a massive success for the Apple iPhone and App Store, how these apps downloads actually break down seriously stretches the word “application” from its typical tool-like connotation in the computer world, to its toned-down connotation in the world of cosmetics and beauty products.

The folks at Gizmodo managed to put together a pie chart that breaks down the apps by category.

Though "Useful Apps" can probably be inflated to take up a lot more of the pie, the fact remains that people really, really enjoy simulating fidgeting with a lighter or coiling and uncoiling a strand of rope.
